A day trip is a stack of small fees and one big fare. Here are the official figures in yen, the pass rules and the tour prices in dollars, so you can price your own day.

Quick look
Start with the fees that every do-it-yourself day pays. A Hiroden streetcar ride from Hiroshima Station to the Dome stop costs 240 yen for an adult, and so does the ride from the Dome stop to the Miyajima-guchi stop.7 The Peace Memorial Museum asks 200 yen from adults and 100 yen from high school students, while junior high school students and younger go free.3 Visitors 65 and older enter for 100 yen on showing their passport.8
On Miyajima the shrine charges adults 300 yen, high school students 200 yen and younger students 100 yen.4 A combined ticket for the shrine and the Treasure Hall costs 500 yen for adults and is sold only at the shrine entrance.9 The island also levies a visitor tax of 100 yen, charged separately from the fare when you enter.2
The Miyajima ferry cost is small. Miyajima Matsudai Kisen lists a standard one-way adult fare of 200 yen and 400 yen round trip, with the visitor tax on top.1 The JR West Miyajima Ferry accepts payment by IC card and accepts the Japan Rail Pass and the JR-West Rail Pass.10,5 These figures are the official ones, in yen, and this page does not convert them.

All fees are quoted in yen as the official sources state them and can change; the visitor tax of 100 yen is charged on top.7,2
Passes are priced for longer trips. The Japan Rail Pass costs 50,000 yen for 7 days in an ordinary car for an adult, and the Green car costs 70,000 yen.12 The Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass costs 17,000 yen for 5 days for an adult and 8,500 yen for a child aged 6 to 11.6 Neither is built around a single outing, so ask whether you will use the pass on other days before buying it for this one.
The area pass does a lot for the money if you stay in the Kansai region. It gives unlimited rides from Kansai to Hiroshima, covers reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima, includes the JR West Miyajima Ferry and is sold to holders of a passport issued by a foreign government.13,14,15 It cannot be used between Hiroshima and Hakata or between Shin-Osaka and Tokyo.16 Even with it, the 100 yen visitor tax is paid when boarding the ferry.17
On the Hiroshima side, Hiroden sells day passes. The 1 Day Streetcar Pass costs 700 yen for adults and 350 yen for children, and the 1 Day Streetcar and Ferry Pass costs 1,000 yen for adults and 550 yen for children, including the visitor tax.18,19 The streetcar-and-ferry pass is not valid on the JR West Miyajima Ferry, because it covers the Matsudai Kisen boat instead.20 Match the pass to the boat you intend to take.
Price in yen
People often ask whether the JR Pass covers the Miyajima ferry, and for the JR boat it does. The JR West Miyajima Ferry accepts the Japan Rail Pass, and its own fare page says you can use your Japan Rail-Pass and JR-WEST Rail-Pass.5 The visitor tax of 100 yen is charged separately and is not covered by any pass.2 The Matsudai Kisen boat is a different company with its own 200 yen fare.24,1
The pass covers the island boat but not every train. Holders cannot ride the Nozomi or Mizuho Shinkansen without a special ticket issued only to pass holders, and the Kyoto City Tourism Association repeats the point.23,25 The pass covers Hikari and Kodama on the Tokaido line, so a holder can take Nozomi by buying a special ticket before boarding.26
Because a day trip is one outing, the question is whether the cheaper route is a pass at all. If you hold a pass already, the ferry is free of charge on the JR boat and the Nozomi surcharge is the cost to price. If you do not, buy single tickets and use the streetcar and the ferry as listed above. The bullet train between the two cities takes 80 minutes, which is JNTO's own figure.27

Our listing
Tours quote their own prices, and each is a from price for the date and group. A Peace history walk starts from $35 and lasts 2.5 hours, a Miyajima half day starts from $76 and lasts 3 to 4 hours, and a small-group day starts from $87 and lasts 6 hours.
Full days cluster higher. A private guided day starts from $98, the rail day from Osaka starts from $95, the big coach day from $126 and a bus-and-bullet-train day from $274. Among the full days, the 6-hour small-group day is the least expensive, while the rail day counts 8 to 11.5 hours from Osaka and leaves the Shinkansen as an option.
Our private day starts from $200 for 8 hours, with a licensed guide, a cap of 10 people and free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The record does not say whether entrance fees are included, so budget the museum, the shrine and the visitor tax in yen as well. A guest in the newest reviews said it would have helped to know roughly how much cash to bring.
The spending in order
At the station
A streetcar from Hiroshima Station to the Dome stop costs 240 yen for adults.7
At the museum
Adults pay 200 yen at the Peace Memorial Museum.3
At the pier
The island charges 100 yen when you enter.2
On the boat
The Matsudai Kisen one-way fare is 200 yen.1
At the shrine
On the mountain
A combined ferry and ropeway ticket costs 2,100 yen per adult.11
Doing it yourself is cheaper in fees and costlier in attention. You pay the yen fees above, the single fare for the bullet train, and you read timetables. The JR timetable gives a ferry about every 15 minutes in the morning, and the last regular boat from Miyajima leaves at 22:14.29,30 A tour absorbs those choices into a set clock.
A private tour trades price for flexibility. You choose the stops you most want from a menu and the guide customizes the day, and the listing is built for groups of up to 10. The calculator above lets you set the group size and see each listing's from price, and the booking widget shows the real total.
Keep one budget rule in mind: never rely on a quoted from price as the final total. Use the yen figures as printed, convert at your own rate, and keep a cash cushion, since the rail-day listings warn that cards and ATMs may not always be available. For the price of the single bullet train fare on your date, check the JR sales site before booking, because this page does not quote it.

The Miyajima Visitor Tax of 100 yen will be charged separately when entering the island.
Before you pay
Children's prices cut the bill for a family. The Hiroden 1 Day Streetcar Pass costs 350 yen for a child, and the 1 Day Streetcar and Ferry Pass costs 550 yen.18,19 The Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass costs 8,500 yen for a child aged 6 to 11.6 At the museum, junior high school students and younger enter free.3
On Miyajima, students pay less at the shrine, with 200 yen for high school students and 100 yen for elementary and junior high students.4 The combined ferry and ropeway round-trip ticket costs 1,100 yen per child against 2,100 yen per adult, and both include the visitor tax.11 Check the visitor tax rule for your child's age at the pier.2
Tour pricing works differently. A small-group listing says children under 6 take part free of charge, while the listing prices otherwise follow the booking widget for your group. The private day is built for a group of up to 10 and never combines groups, so a family can book it as its own party. Count the yen fees for each person on top of any tour price.
