Answer in brief

A Hiroshima tour is mostly a choice between a large coach, a small group on trains and a private guide, because almost every full day visits the same Peace Park and Miyajima.

The legs every tour shares

  • The train to Miyajimaguchi takes about 28 minutes1
  • The ferry then takes about 10 minutes2
  • The museum costs 200 yen for adults4

1Who do you want to share the day with?

A Hiroshima tour can mean a coach with 45 people, a private guide, a 6-hour train-and-tram loop or a half day on Miyajima. Here is what each one gives you and what it takes away.

What actually separates one Hiroshima tour from another

Almost every Hiroshima tour visits the same two places, the Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima, so the stops are not what you are choosing between. You are choosing a group size, a pace and a way of moving. The biggest coach day on this page carries up to 45 people, while the private day we link to caps the group at 10 and does not combine groups. That gap decides how much time goes on waiting for others and how much of the day can bend to your questions.

The next variable is who moves you. Coach days travel by bus and take the ferry to the island. The small-group and private days here use the JR train, the ferry and the streetcar, which is the way a visitor on their own would go. A train from Hiroshima Station reaches Miyajimaguchi in about 28 minutes, and the ferry crossing then takes about 10 minutes.1,2 A tour that walks you through those links keeps you in the real flow of the city.

The last variable is length, and it runs from 2.5 hours for a history walk to 12 hours for a day that begins in Osaka or Kyoto. Price follows length only loosely. The history walk starts from $35, the full private day from $200 and the bus-and-bullet-train day from $274. Read the stop list before the price, because a short tour that leaves out Miyajima can still cost you a second day.

The coach day: a fixed clock for a large group

The coach day on Viator with the most ratings, 9,491 at 4.9, leaves from the Shinkansen ticket gate on the 2nd floor of Hiroshima Station at 10:00 AM. The listing sets the time at each stop: 15 minutes at the Atomic Bomb Dome, 35 minutes in the Peace Memorial Park, 60 minutes at the museum, a 20-minute ferry, 50 minutes at Itsukushima Shrine and 30 minutes on Miyajima. It is a tight plan, and a group of that size moves on the listed clock.

A rival coach day on GetYourGuide has 3,684 reviews at 4.9 and is priced from $121. It gives the museum 1 hour of free time, the shrine 1 hour and Daisho-in 30 minutes, and it offers audio guides in Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese and Ukrainian on top of a live guide in English and Japanese. If your group does not speak either of the live languages, that audio line is the reason to pick this one.

Food is where coach days are strict. The GetYourGuide coach day serves a vegetarian lunch only when you ask at least 2 days ahead, and it offers no vegan, halal or gluten-free meals. The Viator coach day lists an okonomiyaki lunch only for those who choose the lunch option. Anyone with dietary rules should settle lunch before booking, and a self-paced day is easier for that.

Time on the clock

The longest day each type can last

  • Peace history walk2.5
  • Miyajima half day4
  • Small group on trains6
  • Our private day8
  • Biggest coach day8
  • Rail day from Osaka11.5
  • Rail day from Kyoto12

Each figure is the longest duration its listing states; the rail days include the journey from Osaka or Kyoto only when the Shinkansen option is chosen.

Trains, trams and a smaller group

A guided Hiroshima tour does not have to be a coach tour. The small-group day from $87 flips the usual order. It meets on the 2nd floor of Hiroshima Station by the south gate, takes a 27-minute train and a 10-minute ferry to Miyajima first, and only after that rides a 45-minute tram back to the Dome, the park and the museum. Doing the island first puts the torii early in the day and the museum last. Children under 6 take part free, and the listing sells private or small-group places.

A private guide on public transport is the other model. A private guided day from $98 starts with the museum for 1 hour, adds the Cenotaph, the Flame of Peace and the Atomic Bomb Dome for 15 minutes, then takes a 35-minute train and a 10-minute ferry to Miyajima. The listing offers five meeting options and notes that Japanese tourism law means local trains and trams are used, with a taxi arranged on request. The listing is marked wheelchair accessible.

A custom private option from $57 is flexible on length, from 2 to 7 hours, and lets you cancel free up to 4 days before. Its route is a 1-hour train to Miyajima, 2 hours there, a 1-hour tram and 2.5 hours at the Peace Park. These private days cost much less than ours, so the honest comparison is on hours and licensing: ours is the 8-hour version with a licensed guide, and it is listed as the full day.

From Osaka or Kyoto: the rail days and the half days

If you start in Osaka or Kyoto, the day has a built-in cost in hours. JNTO says the bullet train links Hiroshima and Osaka in just 80 minutes, yet the listings still count 8 to 11.5 hours from Osaka and 8 to 12 hours from Kyoto.9 Both start and end at Hiroshima Station, and the round-trip Shinkansen ticket is an option whose departure time is approximate until the day before. They share a price from $95 and carry 320 and 87 reviews.

The bus-and-bullet-train day from $274 bundles the Shinkansen into the price and starts in Osaka or Kyoto, with 1.5 hours of train each way and 12 hours in all. It has 1,195 reviews at 4.7, free cancellation up to 7 days before, a 45-minute okonomiyaki lunch and a warning that the day involves a lot of walking. It is a group tour, so the clock rules, but the logistics are done for you.

Two shorter products solve narrower problems. A Miyajima-only half day from $76 lasts 3 to 4 hours and waits at the coin lockers of JR Miyajimaguchi Station, and a history walk from $35 lasts 2.5 hours and ends at the museum. Neither carries both main sites. Book them when you already have the other half arranged, not as a substitute for the full day.

Why the private day is the one we link to

The listing we book is a private walking tour of Hiroshima and Miyajima with a licensed guide, 8 hours long, with a live guide in Japanese and English and free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Its 1,612 ratings average 4.9, and 1,556 of them are five-star. You choose the stops you most want from a menu in the tour details, and the guide tailors the day around them.

The stops on offer are the Peace Memorial Park for 90 minutes, Hiroshima Castle for 90 minutes, Shukkeien garden for 90 minutes, Miyajima for 60 minutes, Itsukushima Shrine for 60 minutes and a hillside cafe house for 90 minutes. The castle's main keep has been closed since March 2026, but the grounds and the Ninomaru buildings stay open, so a private guide can steer you around that. The newest English reviews all give five stars and praise guides who changed the itinerary on the fly.

There are limits worth knowing. The record does not say what the price includes, and one guest wished they had known how much cash to bring for entrance fees and the boat. The museum asks adults for 200 yen at the door, the shrine asks 300 yen, and the Miyajima visitor tax is 100 yen, so plan for those in yen.4,5,6 A GetYourGuide copy of this same tour sits at $392 and says the guide contacts you before the tour is confirmed.
